Yeah like you say this hobby does span all over the world for the most part, that's what makes me wonder why the government wants to be so tough about trying to stamp it out. They are for ever trying to come up with different ways to dicourage people from wanting to do stuff to the old cars. I feel it to be a way of remembering our past and showing the future generation how to use their imagination in design. I see a lot of the mods us old guys have done to customes showing up coming off the assembly line at least to some degree. Example was GM with the mid to late Grand Prix with the handle in the door post and shavrd from the door skin, just to mention one. My son stsrted tearing the truck down and he even thought of putting parts in baggies and such and labeling what and where it was and came from. He even brought his digital camera and took fotoes before he started of under the hood and all over(smarter than his Dad was at first)KIDS who knew?

Oh yea, i totally agree. I don't understand why they would want to hinder our hobby. Its like saying I can't build a model train if i want
Wow thats a smart kid you have, I would of never thought of all that either. Im really happy to hear that he is embracing it and wants to get the truck going. What are his ideas for it?

So far my son wants to lower it (of course),put a wood floor in the bed with brass straps, do away with the outside door handles and tailgate handle. His idea for the tailgate is to make seat belt latches work flush from the inside of the bed????.He also wants to cut an oval in the fender in front of the back tire on each side for the exhaust to exit. I think him and I are in for some real fabricating OK a lot of fabricating. Thank goodness he hasn't given much thought to the interior YET. He already has the paint colors figured out, Bright candy tangerine matalic fading into a frost white bottom and the whole thing then pearl clear coated. He said the suspension and under carriage stuff is up to me to figure out and my wife, his stepmom can figure out the interior. This winter is all spoken for. AS for the 59 colum problem is to fabricate linkage or look into a colum from UDIDIT. Does your car have a factory automatic colum???

Wow you are going to be super busy with that truck but it sounds like his plans for it are great. Its going to look great once its done. Is the truck going to to be his or a family truck and you all get to drive it?

The truck is going to be mostly his, but Dad will be driving it some also you can bet on that (at least when it is home and I can pry his fingers off the steering wheel. He already is saving up to help with the cost of some of the parts. He has a part time job for the summer at Game Stop so he will be making a little bit. He doesn't know it but what ever he donates to the project I'm just going to put in a seperate savings for him. That was the wifes idea. He also wants me to have a couple small jobs to do so he can help and have me pay him part and thats OK with me. I just hope he holds on to this fired up attitude. When school starts back I told him grades come first so this may be only a weekend thing for him then.

Wow thats a really good idea. You guys are some really cool parents he is a lucky kid. When i was a kid my parents did the same thing when i paid rent. I paid 150 bucks but they put it in a savings account for me so it was a nice surprise when i was ready to move out. Thats good that he is going to put school before the truck. You cant beat a good education. Im sure the fired up attitude will continue to grow as he sees the truck come together and when he hears the engine fire for the first time. Nothing beats that kind of excitement

Wow We just had the Steel Valley Super Nat's here in Salem Ohio and man what a turn out. They haven't got the official count yet but they figure about 2500 cars were there. The town was packed in the evening with all the cruisin. The police were cool about it as long as nobody got stupid they just sat back and help control traffic. The racing at the drag strip thru the day and crusin at night was really neat. My son came up with some new ideas for the truck after seeing some of the custome stuff other people had done to thier rides. He defenitly has the itch for next year to be part of all the action. Looks like long days and short nights for me next year, but I'm not complaining. The 3 day event sure seemed to go by fast, but thank goodness for digital cameras and computers. My son is going to make a slide show of all the good pictures he took, and boy he took a lot.

OH YEAH, As soon as he finishes it I'll post it so everyone can see it. His camera also takes moving picture that he is going to incorperate in. Tese kids have it made with all the goodies at thier figuretips to do stuff like this. This will be cool for thier kids to see a few years down the road too. I wish I was as knowledgeable about doing this stuff on the computer, but since he knows how I'll sit back and enjoy watching it.

I'm still young so I was still a kid when this stuff came out and I grew up using it... it was great! Of course me being the web guy here at Custom Rodder has to mean I know what I'm doing.. or at least I'm really good at faking it! Either way it works

I'm not quite as old as dirt but lets just say I have building cars since I was 16 back in 1970. I sometimes think when I started we really only had brazing and leading for fixing them up but now it is so great with MIG & TIG welders and plasma cutters are the greatest. These sure help the building of a basket case go alot smoother. I still use the lead on some of the old stuff I do, but not that much any more.I just started into powder coating parts and that's a little tricky to have it come out just right but with some more practice I'll have it down and can save some bucks by doing it myself plus it's something different to do.

I must say for your age you have a pretty good job. Do you do work on other mags as well. How many are there and are they gear heades too? I like corresponding to someone who has a passion for the custome and rod part of the car world. Most of the people I talk to are at car shows or the people I'm doing a car for. It's neat to see how the other people feel about the car trend and the differences in how they are built in other areas of the country. Well I off on vacation for a week. Going to the Vet musiem in Kentucky for starters from there who knows. Later
